Results of the Russian Language Olympiad

On 21 May, the closing ceremony of the Russian Language Olympiad for foreign students of preparatory faculties took place. The Olympiad, which started back in April, was attended by 170 most active international students of preparatory faculties from 19 educational institutions of higher education in Russia:

During the first extramural stage the participants of the Olympiad presented videos in which they talked about themselves, their speciality and their interests.

The jury thoroughly evaluated the submitted works by various criteria: completeness and information content, consistency and coherence of presentation, grammatical correctness, creativity, etc. The strict jury ranked the 140 best papers, whose authors qualified for the second round.

The second stage consisted of two rounds. In the first round (May 19th) participants took part in a test, in which they were able to show their Russian language skills in oral speech: after a short preparation, each participant presented a speech on a given topic to the jury. The task facing the participants was not an easy one, as they had to express their opinion on the topic and take part in a discussion (answer other participants’ questions on the topic of their speech, as well as listen to other participants’ speeches and ask them questions). Guys with great interest expressed their opinions on topics such as “Pros and cons of online learning”, “My dream job”, “What is more important: family or career?”, “Where to live better: in the city or the countryside?”, “The problem of dating: where young people can meet in my country”, “Internet: pros and cons” and others. It should be noted that children and jury members listened to presentations of each participant with great attention and interest. When assessing the presentations, the jury paid attention to the speech technique, logicality and coherence, creativity, as well as the ability to participate in the discussion.

In the second round (May 20), the participants were offered the game “I know! The children answered questions on the subjects of the speciality. Foreign students showed their skills in presenting knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, and history in Russian.

According to the results of the second stage the winners of the Olympiad were defined. The results of the Olympiad were announced during the online conference on 21 May. The winners were traditionally awarded memorable prizes and diplomas.

As the Olympiad was attended by students with various level of Russian language skills they were divided into several groups. Winners were determined for each group, so there were several participants who won 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

During the Olympiad the students had an additional opportunity to develop communicative competence in Russian language communication with the teachers and students based on their general interest in the Russian language as well as in the subjects of their speciality.

A guided tour of Kazan city centre was organised for the full time participants.
